Application for Collaborative Research Grant
*Deadlines: Letter of Intent (June 15th), Proposal Submission (July 16th)
for August 16, 2007 Funding
Grant Period August 16, 2007-June 30, 2009
PURPOSE: The purpose of this program is to stimulate joint Georgia Tech/UGA research in biomedical areas. Proposals must have at least one co-principal investigator from each institution, and each investigator must be a full time permanent faculty member with rank of assistant professor or higher (or the equivalent research rank). An investigator cannot receive funds simultaneously from more than one grant from this program. Multiple proposals from a faculty member with different co-principal investigators are not allowed.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION: This program is intended to stimulate new research collaborations by providing seed funding so as to obtain the preliminary data necessary for the submission of an external grant application. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of 8 - 10 biomedical scientists from the two institutions. Proposals will be judged on the basis of scientific merit, potential for external funding, and value toward enhancing biomedical research collaborations between the two institutions.
FORMAT: The length of the application shall not exceed four pages, excluding a cover page, a budget page, and a two page (NIH format) curricular vitae of the co-principal investigators. The cover page must contain the title of the project, names of the co-principal investigators and their departments, the amount requested, a one-paragraph summary, and the approval of the relevant departmental chairpersons. The research description should include sufficient information on goals, background, preliminary work, and methods to allow scientific evaluation by reviewers. In addition, the last page should provide one paragraph discussing the potential for future funding if the research is successful and one paragraph describing the value of the research in stimulating Georgia Tech/UGA collaborations.
BUDGETS: The requested budget should not exceed $50,000 annually. The proposals should include a detailed budget and show specifically anticipated expenditures at each institution. Items eligible for support include: salary for research staff, postdoctoral fellows and students, as well as items such as supplies and small equipment. Salary for faculty is not allowed, requests for major equipment items and travel will not be considered, and indirect costs permitted at either institution.
DURATION: Grant applications will be for funding of up to two years in duration. Funds must be spent in the year designated. Second year funding is contingent upon the submission of a satisfactory progress report by May 1, 2008. A final report will be due by August 1, 2009.
SUBMISSION: An original and twelve copies of the application should be received by 4 p.m. on the deadline date (July 16, 2007) in the office of either co-director:
Dr. Harry Dailey |
Dr. Robert M. Nerem |
Note: *Due to the recent funding notification, we are proceeding with a delayed funding scheduled for Year 1 only. Letters of intent are due in the office of both co-directors by June 15, 2007 and the actual proposals are due on July 16, 2007. The award will commence at the beginning of the fall semester (August 16th) for Year 1 only. Year 2 funds will be available on July 1, 2008.
